On July 18, 2025, we came together to celebrate Mandela Day in an extraordinary way, showing our commitment to giving back to the community. The Centre of Orthopaedics Pretoria (Dr Jaco Naude and Dr Derik du Toit) partnered with the WeFixFeet team, visited Ons Tuis, a local care facility, to spend quality time with the elderly. This event was more than just providing foot massages; it was about spreading joy, compassion, and connection to those who have contributed so much to our society.

As we arrived at Ons Tuis, the warmth of the community surrounded us. The elderly residents welcomed us with open arms, their faces brightening with smiles. Our goal for the day was to offer foot massages, which may seem simple but play a vital role in enhancing relaxation, promoting foot care and overall wellness.

Footcare is crucial for the elderly as it significantly impacts their overall health and mobility. With age, individuals may experience reduced circulation, decreased sensation, and various foot conditions that can lead to discomfort or injuries. Proper foot care helps prevent complications such as infections, ulcers, and falls, which are common among older adults. Regular inspections, appropriate footwear, and maintaining foot hygiene can enhance their quality of life, enabling them to remain active and independent for longer. Prioritising footcare not only supports physical well-being but also contributes to emotional health by fostering confidence and mobility.

Mandela Day is a call to action, and what better way to honour Nelson Mandela's legacy than through acts of kindness? By connecting with the elderly, we reflected his values of compassion and respect for all individuals. Each interaction was a beautiful reminder of our shared humanity and our responsibility to care for one another. These moments remind us of our duty to uplift those who have paved the way for future generations.
